Underdstanding Home Networks:

On Sept 15th 2025, the NBN baseline speeds were significantly raised - 100Mbps went to 500Mbps, 250Mbps went to 750Mbps, 500Mbps went to 1000Mbps - and yet the very engine that drives your internet has been left eating the dust. Routers aren't just a thing that connect you to the internet - it is responsible for so much more: directing traffic, managing packets, and even protecting your home!

The right router can allow you to experience home networking the way its meant to be, or the wrong router may mean you're wasting your money on unachievable plan. You may also be completely open to intrusion as most routers given to you by your service provider lack any form of security.

Home Networking in a Nutshell

The NBN: A super-highway of traffic

Data/Packets: Cars driving along that highway at different speeds

ISP Speed/Plan: How fast those cars can travel up to (download and upload speeds differ)

Router: The traffic controller that links the super-highway to your home

Home Internet Speed: How fast the traffic travels around your home

Cybersecurity: The bouncers against unwanted traffic and intrusion

The NBN is a super-highway with cars flying along at different speeds - these speeds are determined by what plan you have subscribed to, and the speed of the servers sending out the cars onto the super-highway. That highway links to your home via a router. The router then acts like a traffic controller, the quality of which will determine both the speed and accuracy of which those cars are directed to its appropriate place.

How those cars travel also determines speeds. For example, if you are hardwired to the network via Cat6A, you technically have the ability to go up to speed of 10Gbps (note: GIGABYTES) over 100m. On the other hand, if you are connected via WiFi5, you might find your speed is maxed at about 450Mbps (note: MEGABYTES) in a really, really good scenario even if your plan is 1000Mbps. Brand, throughput, processing power - all these factors determine the quality of your internet and that stuff is where our expertise comes in.

Then there is the security factor. Imagine each device is a room in your home, and each room has its own door with a lock. The problem with having a basic or unsecured router is that you have let all the "bad" traffic into your home already! Now they're just prying their way around your home like termites trying to burrow into your rooms to get at the goods. They solution is a secure router with a minimum if IPS/IDS.

IDS (Intrusion Detection System) acts like the girl at the front of the nightclub who is checking your dress-code and identification. IPS (Intrusion Prevention System) is like Bob the Bouncer standing behind the door girl and stopping unwanted persons entering the club. While the odd unwanted person might slip through here and there, IDS/IPS significantly CLEANS the internet as it enters your premises amking the likelihood of hacking and intrusion much, much less. Further methods include Honeypot, Firewalls and V-LANS as examples.

REMEMBER: It isn't your job to understand all this in detail, it's ours. It's just good for you to be AWARE of it.
